Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe with more than 40 million inhabitants and is the second largest state in Europe. The country borders Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova to the southwest. In the south, Ukraine borders the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The capital and largest metropolis is Kiev.

General

The war in Ukraine is forcing people to flee. Many families with children are leaving their homes under the most dangerous conditions to find protection. Many of them are weak, wounded and seriously ill. The health promotion programme of the Foundation OrphanHealthcare "Elfen Helfen" (Elves Helping), shows solidarity with all people who are fleeing. The foundation provides safe accommodation, initial medical care, and prospects for families with children in need. At the request of the Ukrainian Embassy in Switzerland, "Elfen Helfen" is implementing a network that builds bridges between refugees and the Swiss population.

Beneficiaries

During the night of March 8th, 27 families from Ukraine landed at the Zurich Airport, many of them with children with rare diseases. These children and their families are provided with safe accommodation and access to health care. In addition, the families are provided with what they need to live in dignity. OrphanHealthcare’s initiative relieves cantonal and municipal authorities, as well as the social services, and create unbureaucratic perspectives where they are most urgently needed.

Meanwhile, a visit gives the impression that most of the children are taking on new courage to face life. Playing also contributes to this, and trauma therapy has proven to be a very effective method of reducing stress and processing what has been experienced.

Project-support

The Foundation OrphanHealthcare is dependent on support to be able to manage the "Elfen Helfen" solidarity campaign. Every contribution and every volunteer count and help to ensure that needy families, some wounded in the war and children with serious illnesses receive help quickly. The network of volunteers not only provides help with translation, logistics and accommodation, but also offers comfort and confidence.
