Tansania, Leganga
Tanzania is a country in East Africa. It is located on the Indian Ocean and borders Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the DR Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south. With just under 56 million inhabitants, the country is the fifth largest in Africa by population. The capital of the state is Dodoma, but the largest city is the coastal city of Dar es Salaam.
Leganga is a small village between Moshi and Arusha. The region is close to the Serengeti National Park and Mount Meru. The village has its own small hospital and school. Life is strongly characterised by agriculture and markets. Despite safari tourism, there are not enough job opportunities for the people. Some inhabitants also work in Arusha, which can be reached by the ‘Dala dala’, the local bus, in about one hour.
As a voluntary donation association, the organisation implements targeted youth projects with its partner organisation, ‘Voice Of Youth Of Tanzania’ (VOYOTA) in Tanzania. The association is committed to education and equal opportunities, especially for girls and young women.
‘Voice Of Youth Of Tanzania’ is an exclusively locally run organisation that implements projects in the Arusha region. Arusha is a city in the north-east of the country and is known for the indigenous Maasai people who live in the region.
Project ideas are developed together with the VOYOTA team. Their many years of experience in the field of local youth work play an essential role here. Ongoing projects are supervised by VOYOTA, while progress and investments are planned in close consultation. The Direct Help 4 Tanzania team provides the necessary materials and financial resources from Switzerland to ensure the long-term implementation and expansion of the project, and to maximise its impact.
Beneficiaries
Young people in Tanzania face major challenges that have a key impact on their future prospects. Women in particular have to put up with various disadvantages. For these reasons, the association decided to launch the ‘Her Voice’ project for women aged 15 to 24.
With ‘Her Voice’, the organisation supports young women from disadvantaged backgrounds so that they can receive full vocational training. This training improves their chances on the labour market and helps to strengthen their financial independence.

Project: Her Voice in Leganga
Every year, the ‘Her Voice’ project offers up to 40 women a six-month vocational training programme free of charge. They can choose between two professional fields: Tailoring or cosmetics and hairdressing. The students spend the whole day in the specially equipped training centre, are trained by specialist teachers, and also attend English, business and computer classes. In addition, the students can gain their first experience in the world of work during a one-month internship.
Graduates of the programme receive a recognised certificate that significantly improves their chances on the job market. They have better opportunities for self-employment, employment in a sewing studio or hair salon, as well as for a scholarship for further education.
The project also won at the youngCaritas Award Evening 2023.
With almost half of the audience votes, ‘Her Voice’ was voted the favourite project of the evening.
